A P52 billion Visayas-Mindanao Interconnection Project (VMIP) will connect power generating facilities in Mindanao and Visayas by 2020.
The project, a submarine cable system that will be laid down will have a capacity to transmit 400MW between Mindanao and Visayas as announced by Cynthia D. Perez-Alabanza, spokesperson and head of Corporate Communication and Public Affairs Department of National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), during the Press Briefing on the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) in Mindanao at Pidoks, Davao City held last February 21, 2017.
The interconnection will connect power grids of Visayas and Mindanao enabling the two regions to buy power from each other.
It will be distributed to cooperatives and directly-connected consumers in both regions. The connection will take place in Dipolog City for Mindanao and Cebu Province for Visayas. The selling and purchase of power will depend on the power demand in both Visayas and Mindanao.
"The December 2020 target is assuming that we will not encounter any delays," Alabanza said.
