Top 8 Universities in Visayas and Mindanao
Do you aspire to get schooled in a prestigious university, but you don't want to get too far away from home? There are more than a hundred of universities and colleges in both Visayas and Mindanao to choose from but for your convenience, we narrowed down the list to top 8 best performing schools based on the number of Center of Excellence (COE) and Center of Development (COD) awarded by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to these universities.

Centers of Excellence (COEs) are higher education institutions, whether public or private, which have demonstrated the highest degree or level of standards along the areas of instruction, research and extension of their particular fields or courses. Centers of Development (COD) on the other hand, are educational disciplines which have been considered to significantly improve over the course of the previous year.

CHED employs a comprehensive process before awarding COEs and CODs to universities. There are crucial prerequisites such as passing rate on Licensure Examinations, number of institutional researches, and participation in collaborative research programs before COEs and CODs are awarded. In the entire Visayas and Mindanao, University of San Carlos in Cebu ranks first having 12 CODs and 8 COEs. In Mindanao, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) bags the highest number of COEs (6 COEs in all).

The tally above shows a tie between the University of Mindanao in Davao and Siliman University in Dumaguete City. We earlier stated that the next consideration whenever there's a tie is the number of disciplines involved, but these two have the same total number of CODs and COEs which is 6. Xavier University, though it scored 9 points together with University of Mindanao and Siliman University, advances to the fourth rank since it has eight disciplines in total, seven CODs and one COE.

Most courses awarded with Center of Excellence at MSU-IIT are under natural science disciplines such as Physics and Mathematics. It is also the only school dedicated to Ceramics Engineering that it earned COE status. Xavier University and Central Mindanao University both earned Center of Excellence for Agriculture discipline. Last 2013, Literature in Xavier University was on the COE list but the latest CHED memorandum enlisted the course under Center of Developments.

(NOTE: CHED listed University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTsP) as Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) in the original data source.
