It's not a completely passable yet. Two days ago, Igpit Bridge, the shortest way from Cagayan de Oro to the rest of western Mindanao, collapsed and orchestrated heavy traffic that caused delay of daily economic activity. A part of the bridge gave way due to the continuous rain in the past few days which caused the terrain to become soft according to Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Yesterday, CDODEV reported that repair was being done to the collapsed bridge approach. When it finally opened 3:15PM yesterday, traffic improved along the National Highway in Opol. But this part of the bridge is passable only to light vehicles not exceeding 20 tons. Heavy trucks coming from Cagayan de Oro is still barred from the collapsed west-bound portion of the bridge.
How important is Igpit Bridge actually? According to Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Vicente Emano as reported by Sunstar, huge volume of traffic is being served by Igpit Bridge daily. When a car count was conducted by authorities from 12PM to 1PM, it was revealed that more than 600 vehicles are going to Cagayan de Oro City from Iligan and not less than 500 are exiting the city. “You can just see from the figure how big of a volume ang ga-agi nga car diha (of cars that passes through that route), it is a very vital road,” Emano said.

“I told the contractor nga we will try to follow Singapore-style nga traffic, we have to upgrade the bridges. The Singapore model goes like this, nakita nato pinaagi sa car count nga dako kaayo ang volume sa sakyanan nga musulod sa Cagayan sa buntag unya gamay lang ang mogawas sa iligan nga side, ug kung hapon pud daghan na paingon Iligan, gamay ang sa Cagayan” he added as reported by Sunstar.

The airport operations are being affected by the collapse of Igpit bridge. Philippine Airlines released an advisory yesterday that it will be waiving rebooking fees for passengers who missed/will miss their flights out of Cagayan de Oro. Those affected may re-book within 30 days from original flight date or within ticket validity period. Only passengers of March 7-9, 2017 for Cagayan de Oro – Manila and for Cagayan de Oro – Cebu flights are covered by the waiver of rebooking fees, CDODEV reported.
