CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY- DPWH Region X admitted the last big project they completed intended to spare the city from flood, the elevation of Bitan-ag Creek bridge, was a failure. Last time heavy rain hit the city, Lim Ket Kai Complex and the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTSP) which both sit on the area next to the elevated bridge, inundated with neck level water.
Bitan-ag Creek is one of the major waterways of Cagayan de Oro. It runs through the major residential and business districts. It also serves as the drainage of water coming from Cogon Market area, Osmena Street, Provincial Capitol Compound, Ramonal Village, Barangay Nazareth, and a portion of Divisoria. No wonder why water level rises effortlessly during heavy rain.
But the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is now working on a solution: P1.2 billion drainage masterplan for National Highway and the Bitan-ag Creek. It will have 17 drainage projects along the Bitan-ag Creek, and much of the 2nd district’s urban barangays, where the creek traverses with a total length of 9,853.78 meters or almost 10 kilometers.

According to Engineer Arthur Cupay, planning and design head of DPWH Region X, massive urbanization has also resulted to the construction of houses along the creek, contributing considerably to the flooding problem. The drainage projects along the Bitan-ag Creek will be completed after two years, and he added, "...we want the people to stop throwing garbage into the waterways, we cannot do it alone."

As of recently, another project is now ongoing along Agora road called Agora Subterranean Canal, a 600-meter canal wide enough to fit two jeepneys inside and runs from Limketkai Complex to Agora. Unfortunately, according to Cagayan de Oro City 2nd District Representative Maxino Rodriguez , they are still negotiating with Puregold because the canal will run underneath their building. "The Design would then allow the Bitan-ag Creek to fork between Lim ket Kai and Puregold, dividing its waters that would drain into Macajalar Bay," Rodriguez said. Photo below shows the recent construction activity in Agora.
