With a total of 5,251,979 metric tons of cargo throughput, the Port of Cagayan de Oro ranks as the busiest port in Mindanao in terms of cargo throughput. This is followed by Davao-Sasa Port with 4,185,632 metric tons of cargo throughput and General Santos receiving 2,690,209 metric tons.
In terms of passenger traffic, Cagayan de Oro ranks fourth.
Last year 2016, Cagayan de Oro port in Macabalan received another giant gantry crane to handle containers from container and cargo ships. Overall, it now has three gantry cranes.
The port of Cagayan de Oro have the shortest distance going to and from the major ports in the Visayas and Luzon, thus making it the the favorite exit of people and cargo coming from various points in Mindanao. With its strategic location and with the numerous expansion, Cagayan de Oro city has become the logistics center for the adjacent provinces of Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Bukidnon, Agusan and Surigao City.
Cagayan de Oro port has an anchorage depth of 18 meters and is around 400 meters from the shoreline. With the recent completion of the P250 million rehabilitation project, the port is now the biggest international and domestic seaport in Mindanao.
