In a public consultation held in Cagayan de Oro today, January 25, most local barangay officials vote to delay Barangay Election in Mindanao on May 14.
These local government leaders who expressed their support for postponement argue that barangay elections could hamper implementation of national government programs in their localities.
Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said in a statement posted in COMELEC’s website that the consultations “are precisely meant to help the Commission determine whether or not the upcoming elections should be postponed in Mindanao.”
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced that barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections in Mindanao are postponed while the Martial Law is still in effect.
The election commission will hold another consultation in Cotabato this January 29. Another round of consultation was held last January 22 in Zamboanga City
